About Lian
Engaging audiences, from museums to mobile
Lian Amaris has over a decade of experience as a successful creative communicator. Her work spans the fields of new media, visual arts, games, performance, storytelling, and interactivity. She has 9 publications in books and journals, has presented her original research at 11 international conferences and has participated in 5 residencies and over 30 festivals and exhibitions. For her provocative work, she has been on the front page of The New York Times, been called a “meme goddess” by Forbes, and shown at such venues as The Guggenheim Museum and The San Jose Museum of Art.
Lian has Master’s degrees in Interactive Telecommunications and in Performance Studies, both from NYU, where she focused on transmedia storytelling, immersive environments, and audience experience. She was a full-time professor of Performance Studies and New Media for three years, was a 2011 writing resident with Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and spent several years as an editor and copywriter for media theorist Doug Rushkoff.
With a focus on audience and communication in both startup and corporate spheres since 2011, Amaris has more recently worked on a range of mobile applications including voter registration, relationships/dating, music discovery, near-field communication, and games. She has overseen content development and communication strategies for communities of over 3 million people. She has also created original campaigns and content for partners including Kim Kardashian, Skydance, MGM, Philips, Apple, (RED), and Google Play. Her social media campaigns have organically increased social reach from between 900% and 3200% in as little as six weeks and have earned extensive media coverage including MSNBC, The Next Web, The Huffington Post and more. Additionally, she led a six-month project with the GoogleX team in an exclusive Research and Development partnership for Google Glass; the work resulted in her being named as an inventor on two awarded patents for processes for hands-free (specifically head-mounted) computing devices.
